Media Release: JPC Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Outdoor Advertising

The Joburg Property Company (JPC) has intensified its citywide crackdown on illegal outdoor advertising, conducting targeted enforcement operations along major routes, including the M1 North near Midrand.

The operation focused on advertising structures illegally connected to City Power infrastructure, erected without approval, or placed on public land without authorisation. Working alongside Development Planning, JMPD, City Power and the Johannesburg Roads Agency, JPC has already removed approximately 50 illegal signs since December, reinforcing that compliance with municipal by-laws is non-negotiable.

Illegal advertising poses serious public safety risks, contributes to visual clutter, and deprives the City of critical revenue used to support service delivery. JPC has urged brands to verify the compliance status of media owners before purchasing advertising space and has confirmed that penalties, including fines of up to twelve times the standard rates, may be imposed where violations persist.
