The JPC Extends an Open Invitation to the Metro Centre Piazza

Transforming the Metro Centre precinct into a green Piazza, the JPC extends an open invitation encouraging Joburg residents and city visitors to pause, take time to connect with the community and revel in the evolving Jozi skyline. What was once a concrete Metro Centre Precinct has since been softened by the new Council Chambers creating a space for a revitalized and modern Piazza. Set to become the “town crier” for those who live and work in Braamfontein and surrounds, the first of many place-makers earmarked by the Johannesburg Property Company as part of their rejuvenation project, the Metro Centre Piazza has created for a communal space allowing for locals to meet, relax socialize and gather at.

The new JPC Metro Centre Piazza offers a flexible design that can be transformed to suit the changing seasons or various events that invite the community to mix and relax in this family friendly environment. Equipped with a large outdoor digital screen that will not only showcase the speaker sessions in the newly built Council Chambers above, but will also screen features of national interest such as soccer, world news and on the odd night, a movie under the stars.

The Council Chamber offers shade from the harsh sun during the Joburg summer months while softening the winter rays through the additional use of specifically placed trees and seat planters on the rainbow paved walkways. Reminiscent of the “long walk to freedom” as experienced by Nelson Mandela when he left prison after 27 years, the launch of the Piazza comes 23 years after President Mandela exited the voting station on the 27th April 1994 with the words “We are starting a new era of hope, reconciliation and nation-building”.

Shaped along with the walkways, is the creative element of a skate park, outdoor chess set and table tennis as well as a large outdoor gym in the surrounding gardens which will feature during the completion of Phase Two developments.

Designed around a community element that is now fast becoming a true sign of a merging Johannesburg, solar street lighting forms part of the 5 Star Green award already received for this new eco-friendly island. Charging stations and free Wifi for the fast growing mobile friendly generation has also been scheduled as part of Phase Two installations ensuring that no sector of the community is excluded.

Gone are the days when littering was an acceptable practice, further Phase Two developments will see the new Piazza adequately fitted with reduce, reuse and recycle bins as a strong reminder to those using the park to keep the area clean and in support of the Green Star Award.

A planned installation of a pergola will provide a pleasant and green encounter for those enjoying the pavement dining experience as restaurants and pavement cafes are scheduled to open over the next few months. The council dining room will also extend into the Piazza and although safely enclosed, it will share the shade and space with this new community Piazza.

As the sun sets after a productive day at the Council Chamber or following a leisurely visit to the Piazza, councilors and visitors alike can enjoy a gentle walk to Park Station and the world class Gautrain, renowned for having led the way to the various changes that have uplifted not only the Johannesburg community but our facilities and our spirits too. Visitors may also access the Council Chamber and Metro Centre Piazza via the Hop-On Hop-Off Red Tour Buses offered by

While the Council Chamber is open weekdays from 8am to 4:30pm the Metro Centre Piazza is open for public access throughout the week and on weekends.
