This portfolio takes care of the social needs of the CoJ’s citizens. We manage properties for lease by NGOs, NPOs, churches, and sports and recreational facilities.According to the Asset Register, the CoJowns 920 facilities used for NGO activities and sports and recreation purposes. There are schools no longer in use in Soweto due to the migration of students to the Johannesburg CBD and surrounding areas. Some of these schools have been handed over to the CoJ and the Social portfolio is in the process of regularising tenancy in these properties. When they were vacated and closed, some NGOs moved in and started operating in these centres illegally. They did not have a lease agreement, nor were they paying rent to the CoJ. The process that the Social portfolio is undertaking is by formalising tenancy and filling vacant properties with NGOs. Currently, JPC is involved in a pilot project involving only six schools.
